I have been an illustrator for 11 years now, and the jobs vary from week to week. For example; waterproof fishing books, calendars, exhibition boards, portraits and caricatures to name but a few.
The Coppertwaddle commission was a refreshing and creatively inspiring project, as well as a challenging one. Trying to emulate the medieval woodcut style, whilst giving it a polished contemporary feel, was probably the hardest part of the job. Piles of books containing medieval artwork were studied to give the drawings that authentic feel.
Bringing to life such elusive characters as the Bentham Fish, various blowing winds, Mount Ararat and of course the Mappa Mundi, helped to remind me what a fantastic job illustration can be. I sincerely hope that all the Coppertwaddlers out there enjoy the artwork as much as I did drawing it.
Away from the drawing table I am kept busy with a husband and 2 small children. Hand prints with poster paints, model dinosaurs and fighting soldiers are also very exciting!!
